Privacy & Cookie Policy
What this site stores in your browser, what Google Analytics and Google AdSense collect, and how to change your mind.

Cookies and storage this site uses
- Strictly necessary — always on. A single session cookie (
wpa_session) used only when a staff member logs in to access the site during its pre-launch preview or to use the content manager. It does not track visitors and is not set for anyone who is not logged in. - Your cookie choice.Your accept/reject decision below is remembered in your browser’s local storage (
wpa_cookie_consent) so you are not asked again on every visit. The same choice covers both analytics and advertising cookies below — this site does not offer a separate toggle for each. - Analytics — only if you accept them. If you accept, Google Analytics sets its own cookies (e.g.
_ga) to measure visitor traffic. These are not set until you actively choose to accept them, and can be turned off again at any time below. - Advertising — Google AdSense. This site uses Google AdSense, which may show adverts and may set its own cookies and similar technologies. See the next section for how your choice affects what kind of adverts are shown.
What Google Analytics collects
If you accept analytics cookies, Google Analytics records general usage information: which pages you visit, roughly how long you spend on them, approximate country/region-level location, device and browser type, and how you arrived at the site (e.g. a search engine or a direct link). It is used only to understand how the archive is used and to improve it.
Advertising — Google AdSense
This site uses Google AdSense, which may show adverts to help support the cost of hosting and researching the archive. Google describes advertising in three broad categories, and your consent choice affects which of them can be shown to you:
- Personalised adverts — Google uses cookies, device identifiers and your browsing activity to choose adverts based on your interests. Requires your consent; not shown if you reject.
- Non-personalised adverts — not based on your individual interests, but Google may still use cookies or similar technologies for things like measuring how an advert performed, limiting how often you see the same one, or preventing fraud. This still involves storing or accessing information on your device, so it also requires your consent under UK rules; also not shown if you reject.
- Limited adverts— where advertising consent has not been provided, Google may be able to serve limited adverts using more restricted data than personalised or non-personalised advertising uses. Depending on this site’s AdSense settings, limited adverts may still use cookies or local storage for security, fraud prevention and invalid-traffic detection. This site has not yet confirmed the relevant limited-adverts and invalid-traffic-storage settings in the AdSense dashboard, so this section will be reviewed once that configuration is confirmed. We do not currently state that limited adverts are enabled, disabled, or free of all storage — only that Google may be able to use this category regardless of your consent choice.
In short: rejecting advertising consent prevents personalised and non-personalised advertising storage that requires consent. It does not necessarily guarantee that no advertising request or limited advertisement will occur.
You can review or turn off ad personalisation directly with Google at Google Ads Settings. For more detail on what Google itself does with this data, see how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
